Who We Are
Across Myanmar, communities continue to navigate uncertainty, protect one another, and find ways to move forward despite ongoing challenges. The Alliance for Social Justice (ASJ) exists to support these efforts — working alongside local communities to strengthen resilience, amplify lived experiences, and contribute to a more just and inclusive future.
ASJ was formed in response to the urgent need for social justice in conflict-affected areas. Our work is shaped by the realities people face every day and guided by the belief that lasting change comes from within communities themselves. We collaborate closely with local partners, civil society groups, and grassroots networks to share knowledge, strengthen local initiatives, and support collective action.
Since 2021, our focus has included documenting how communities are affected by ongoing socio-political changes, while also supporting practical, community-driven responses in areas such as:
- Staying safe and managing risks in unstable environments
- Strengthening access to health and education
- Promoting gender equality and addressing gender-based harm
- Building understanding of rights, governance, and civic participation
Supporting Community Resilience and Accountability
The experiences of communities matter — not only locally, but also in shaping broader understanding and responses.
ASJ works with community members to document lived realities across Myanmar, ensuring that their voices and experiences are not overlooked. This includes gathering insights on how conflict and instability affect daily life, safety, and access to essential services.
Through shared documentation, dialogue, and collaboration with partners, we contribute to ongoing efforts that promote accountability, strengthen local responses, and connect community perspectives with wider national and international conversations.
Our Work in Practice
Our work focuses on supporting what communities are already doing — strengthening their ability to respond, adapt, and lead in challenging contexts.
Risk Reduction and Community Safety
We work with communities to share practical approaches that help people stay safe and reduce risks in volatile environments. These sessions build on local knowledge and equip individuals and families with strategies they can apply in their daily lives.
Health and Well-being
Together with local partners, we facilitate learning spaces where communities exchange knowledge on health, including disease prevention, mental well-being, and access to available services. The focus is on strengthening everyday practices that support healthier lives.
Education Support
We collaborate with educators, volunteers, and community members to strengthen learning opportunities for children in conflict-affected areas. This includes sharing teaching approaches and supporting local efforts to create meaningful and accessible education experiences.
Gender Equality and Inclusion
Our work supports community-led efforts to promote gender equality and address gender-based harm. We engage with women, men, and young people to encourage dialogue, strengthen awareness, and support safer and more inclusive environments for all.
Civic Awareness and Participation
We support communities in exploring ideas around democracy, human rights, and federalism in ways that are practical and relevant to their daily lives. These discussions aim to strengthen understanding, confidence, and participation in shaping their own futures.
